Thanks to popular media like the recent D&D movie, tabletop gaming is currently having a renaissance among all age groups. It's like a more structured form of "playing pretend", where dice rolls and equations determine the outcome of your character's actions. The Dungeon Master, or Game Master, narrates the story and creates the world around you as you play.
Earlier editions of D&D had a steep learning curve and could be intimidating for many newcomers to the hobby. However, the latest edition of the rules (5th edition) is much easier to pick up. At my table, you won't need to know any of the rules or mechanics coming in - I'll teach you everything you need to know and guide you along the way.
All you need to start playing D&D is a set of dice and a character sheet, which can be either paper or digital via a free service like D&D Beyond. All necessary materials will be provided at my table, including virtual content, so don't worry if you don't have your own supplies. All players will also receive a free set of dice to keep after their first session!
I love GMing for players of all ages - most of my players these days are kids! However, games like D&D can be complicated, and I've found that kids below the age of 7-8 tend to struggle to stay focused. I'm happy to include younger kids if they're accompanying a parent or older sibling so that everyone can participate in the fun. I'll always make sure the content of our adventures is age-appropriate for everyone at the table.
I was a babysitter before I became a professional Game Master, so I've got plenty of experience caring for younger adventurers! I'm happy to combine our gaming session with chores, homework, meals, et cetera, with or without parents in the house. Just communicate this when you book your session - I'll always offer flexibility to fit your family's needs.
Many experienced players come prepared with a character they already know and love, especially at public events! If possible, please communicate this information to your GM before the adventure so I can plan accordingly. If your character is a high level or uses obscure/home-brewed content, I may ask you to make minor edits to make sure you'll fit in with the rest of the party.
Adventuring is hard work, so feel free to serve food as long as there's still a clear table space to play on. If everyone at the table is 21+, grown-up beverages are allowed as well. I even have some D&D-inspired potion recipes to recommend...
